Quick study on Mediabistro’s call for media haiku

By Stefan Arnold, January 15, 2010 11:38 am

Last week, @mediabistro asked followers to post haiku on their current view of the media landscape. See all the haiku here.

The results ranged from TMZ and Tiger Woods to newspapers, Web sites and Twitter.

My favorites included

Steve Smith’s fossils in newsrooms
can’t or just won’t change their ways
time for more coffee

Becky Chambers Hennessy’s Mull writer’s seascape.
Cloudless regatta Sunday.
Freelance skipper wins.

Tara Zucker’s Content needed now!
There is not time to proofing
Hurray and hit send

and

Alexandra Leh’s blah blah blah blah blah
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
blah blah blah blah blah

Three themes jumped out at me….

1. It’s a Web World: Several haiku were about news being 24/7, Web sites or being short and quick with the content. Others focused on newspaper and their Web sites … and the struggle of the transition.

2. Paying for content: There were also haiku on paying for content and how papers no longer dominate news, including

Michael Corones’ print once ruled the world
the dinosaurs did as well
look where they are now

3. Lack of jobs: Haiku were also written about freelancing and working hard for content. One writer talked about high salaries for bosses and another ended with “fries with that shake sir?”

The post was an interesting read with several funny entries.

My entry is near the bottom.

  • Thanks for the analysis! We're thinking of making this regular activity with our community. Perhaps a "Haiku the News" once a week on Twitter and Facebook. Would love to get yours and everyone's thoughts.
